Guru Review: 'Lando: Double or Nothing, Part I'

June 23, 2018

So, after weeks of delays, I finally read STAR WARS: LANDO: DOUBLE OR NOTHING, PART I. When this series was first announced, it was immediately something I put at the top of my "to read" list. After seeing SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY, I became even more excited to get my hands on this comic book. It was released May 30, 2018. LANDO: DOUBLE OR NOTHING, PART I is written by Rodney Barnes with art from Paolo Villanelli. Here's what I thought of issue #1 of STAR WARS: LANDO: DOUBLE OR NOTHING. Be mindful. There are major spoilers to follow.

The first thing I noticed when reading this comic is the opening text. It is written and presented just like the opening text in SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY. This is a nice touch that makes me feel like I'm reading something deeply connected to the latest movie.

Basically right off the gate, we get a Calrissian Chronicles mention. Lucasfilm needs to go ahead and give us those stories. Stop playing with us!

Lando and L3 are perfect in this comic. The creative team behind this story really nailed down the look and spirit of Donald Glover's Lando and Phoebe Waller-Bridge's L3. Every one of their lines in this comic, I read in their respective actor's voices.

To be honest, L3-37 and her sass were my favorite part of this comic. She throws a lot of shade at Lando. Their relationship is fun to read.

Also, at this point in the timeline, Lando really should be all about the money and not the cause. This comic shows us that Lando. Hopefully, he will stay that way through the remainder of the series.

This #1 issue does what any first comic in a series should. It sets up the next issue very nicely, while also standing on its own, to get you interested in the series to begin with. The plot is basically about a woman looking to free her people from Imperial enslavement. She needs something smuggled, so she goes to the best smuggler in the galaxy, Lando Calrissian. Now, we have seen a few Lando smuggling missions in the past, so I am hoping this story will stand out from the rest. Fingers crossed.

The artwork is incredible. You could honestly just flip through the pages and still love the comic. Don't do that, though. Actually read it. The story has some potential and I'm interested to see where it goes from here. If you loved Donald Glover and Phoebe Waller-Bridge in SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY, this story is for you. I'd say this comic pretty much met my expectations. I wasn't expecting some battle heavy, lightsaber swinging epic starring Lando Calrissian. I just want some fun laughs and good adventure filled action. That's what I expect from a Lando series, and this comic fulfilled that.

STAR WARS: LANDO: DOUBLE OR NOTHING, PART I gets 4 kyber crystals out of 5. Definitely pick this one up.
